About Barbara O'Sullivan

I was born in Whangarei in 1950 and attended Northland Polytechnic as a foundation student of the New Zealand Craft Design course and achieved my Certificate, then extended to Diploma level, specializing in hot blown glass and photography.

My first exhibition of paintings was held in 1994 and I continued to exhibit locally until in 2006 I applied to study at Whitecliffe College of Arts & Design in Auckland. In November 2008 I graduated with my Masters Degree in Fine Arts, with 2nd Class Honours. My research is concerned with how the Buddhist concept of emptiness and the union of opposites impact both on contemporary art and art theory, and titled “Painting the Paradox of Emptiness”. My full thesis is available either as a Word document (4.72mB) or as an Adobe PDF file (4.74mB).
